I do think they will around in a couple of years. ( I could always be wrong though ). The production is stepping up and the costs are coming down. Some SACD discs I have seen are selling for as low as $14.99.

All of the new Rolling Stones re-issues are hybrid discs with SACD as the second layer. Lot's of new titles are coming out in these formats although they are still remasters.

One company, AIX Records is recording all new music for their releases in 5.1 format. Mostly classical and Jazz but I purchased one of thier discs which sounds great without the 5.1 mix, John McEuen and Jimmy Ibbotson - Nitty Gritty Surround which was named the best DVD-A release of 2002. With the DVD-A mix you can choose to have the best seat in the house or you can choose to sit in the middle of the band on stage. ( they played in a circle facing each other.) http://www.aixrecords.com

Players for the car are rolling out now and Pioneer has come out with a player that will handle both formats. The first was a 5000 dollar piece of equipment, the new model is under 1000.00. ( DV47Ai ) I paln to purchase one of these this year.

The list of available product is growing fast and I believe that new releases will be recorded for this format in short order. It may even replace the technology that we are listening to today.

DTS To Release Frank Zappa’s Halloween: Live in New York on DVD-Audio

WARNING: Image embedded by poster.
Halloween may be nine months away, but every day is a little like Halloween when you listen to Frank Zappa. Now the work of the legendary mastermind behind songs such as “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow,” “Valley Girl” and “My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama” is coming to DVD-Audio with DTS’ release of Frank Zappa’s Halloween: Live in New York on February 4, 2003.

Assembled and mixed into 5.1 surround sound by Joe Chicarelli and Zappa’s son Dweezil, the DVD-Audio disc will feature a previously unreleased vintage 1978 live performance at the Palladium in New York. As an added bonus, the disc will also contain pre-show interviews, a video clip of Zappa’s "Dancing Fool" performance on "Saturday Night Live" and an official discography of the late musician’s nearly 100 album career.

I'm a sucker for a good re-release if it is done well and like you say, better.
