Actually, her poor mental condition was a direct result of space travel. It went unreported, or covered up at least, when she encountered an alien being which attached itself to her face, plundging a long member down her throat and into her stomach cavity. It's only a matter of time before the offspring presents itself in a dramtic entrance.
For now though, she is undergoing mind control or mind "outta" control as a result of eletrical impulse from the parasite within.
