I have never defended his purjury on that basis, I do however feel like he was set up because what man is going to spill his guts about such matters in a public, in an on the record situation such as this ? He was asked the question in that situation for that very reason which is pretty underhanded. Not to defend what he did, mind you. His argument about "words" later didn't hold much weight in anyone's camp I would imagine.
