Yes. Absolutely. I've read it twice and it took both readings to begin penetrate the depth of this novel.
Lowry's character, the Consul, portrayed by Albert Finney in the film, was mostly autobiographical.
Lowry really only had one great book in him, but the result was one of the great pieces of literature of
the 20th century.It is NOT easy reading, and many readers have given up on it. If you have the patience, and the
interest, I think you'll be completely absorbed into the story- the prose, the symbolism- which takes
place in a single day- the last day of the main character's life.
