Wow. The entire world was gun free for millions of years. Or for you creationists, many thousands, at least. What a stupid civilization we left behind indeed. Now that everyone can (and should) have a gun, what a glorious time we live in. It's wonderful to know that if my kids' schools aren't gun free they will be safer.
I can't recall the exact chapter and verse where Jesus said "Intimidate the living crap out of your brother, lest he may consider doing bad things unto you" or "make peace with thine conscience, lest ye be troubled when you give him what he's got coming" or "An armed society is a polite society" (my personal favorite).
What I do remember from my bible studies as a teen was "Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth" (Matthew 5:5); "Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God" (Matthew 5:9); "You have heard that it had been said: You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy. But I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you" (Matthew 5:43-44); "If it be possible, as much as lies in you, live peacefully with all men" (Rom 12:18); "And, behold, one of them which were with Jesus stretched out his hand, and drew his sword, and struck a servant of the high priest’s, and smote off his ear. Then said Jesus unto him, Put up again your sword into its place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword" (Matthew 26:51-52).
Thse are some of the (many) things in Christianity which are good, which should be the basis for a conscientious society. It's amazing to me that so many of the people who call themselves Christians conveniently forget or avoid these critical aspects of Christ's teachings. So I have a hard time believing that somewhere up in his heaven God is saying "good for that serious strong woman for taking a life that I created. Good for that woman who took a life rather than following the teachings of my son. Guns are good tools and more of my children should carry them."
