There was a writer (local boy - in town taking a break from the picket lines to visit relatives and friends, the host being the latter) on local radio this week - he said that
(1) The other unions have clauses written into their contracts that they will honor brother unions strikes/picket lines without management reprisals.
(2) The studios have refused to negotiate with the writers, in hopes of getting a better deal with the directors guild when their contract expires later this year (Feb?) this will set a precedent for the other unions.
(3) The writers guild offered the interim contracts to the producers as a good faith gesture - only the independents (Letterman/Worldwide Pants) took them up on it.
