Eugene, Yes, the Congress may have been "controlled" by Democrats, but let's be honest - with the Senate being only a one vote majority, there is no way any Congress could get much done, regardless of which party, if faced with these types of majorities. What I find completely unbelievable is how many people are ignorant to the facts that show this crisis has its origins all the way back to the 80's Saving's and Loan scandal. On top of this, this "crisis" did not start over night or suddenly creep up on us. It has been building and those that keep saying how it snuck up on us or erupted suddenly are just saying so to cover their own assess. Hell, I have to admit, many parts to this story are complex for me, but there have been a few articles out there that have sort of made it a bit more understandable. Lastly, for anyone who thinks this story has not been building, check out past issues of The Nation, In These Times, The Progressive and Mother Jones. These periodicals have had article after article on this crisis and even a couple of them are several years old.
