My father-in-law used to work for a very large shoe company here in Maine. It was purchased a few years ago by Berkshire Hathaway. While most of the operational piece remained in Maine the production piece was moved to the Dominican Republic. The company saved millions of dollars. It's true several hundred people were laid off due to this decision BUT it also created twice as many jobs in the DR. The people were given a steady job in a country whose unemployment rate is about 25-30%. The unemployment rate in Maine is much lower and most who lost their jobs found another one rather quickly. The average household in DR earns about $100 -$200 a month. These people are now being paid about $3.00 an hour to make shoes. That's five times what everyone else is making.
I'm not saying all U .S. companies don't exploit the people in third world counties but this an example of one that has done far more good than harm.
