Patty Griffin is brilliant, no question about it.  I saw her open for Emmylou Harris and was blown away.  She had this quite little voice that she would use to introduce her songs then out of nowhere this powerful vocal would pop out and rip through one of her tortured tunes.  She is also quite a guitar player and good looking too!  If you don't have the album Living with Ghosts, get it at once, I think its by far her best work.
