We just got back from seeing it. This is as complete of a dramatic film as I've seen from the Coens (although I haven't seen A Serious Man yet). They play true to the genre, the dialogue is terrific (much of it is the same as the 1969 version, which I'm assuming is the same as the book), the acting is top notch all the way around, Roger Deakins' cinematography rivals what he did on "No Country", and Carter Burwell's score is note perfect.

Bridges inhabits Rooster in a way John Wayne couldn't. John Wayne played Rooster as John Wayne, just a little crankier. Bridges remakes himself in a similar way as he did in "Crazy Heart", and I forgot that I was watching Bridges after about 20 minutes.

The real heart of the film is the girl who plays Mattie Ross. If she doesn't get an Oscar nomination there is something terribly wrong with the Academy. Matt Damon is fine, Barry Pepper channels Robert Duvall's portrayal of Ned Pepper, and Josh Brolin is underused as Tom Chaney.
