Would any other reaction make sense?"In an objective narrative it would not make sense, it would be incongrous--that's my point, the whole thing is from Mattie's subjective perspective, looking back as an adult at the events that took place when she was 13. And that's what makes this a far superior filmed version of the book than the 1969 Hathaway/Wayne debacle.
