If you're open to it, I'd recommend "The Battle for God" by Karen Armstrong; a well researched take on the modern rise of fundamentalism, not only in America but throughout the world.
You may not like Kristof but he raises some interesting points. I don't think he rates the dismissal of "arrogant jerk-off". Save that for someone who really deserves it.
