The strategy should have been for all Trump's opponents to reject him, say he did not represent what the party stood for, that he was unfit to be president, that quotes Hitler, that nobody in any party that has been charged with 91 felony counts and been found liable for raping a woman and then defaming the woman he raped is acceptable as a candidate for office. This should have been repeated and backed by the RNC and Republicans holding office. Instead, just one guy took the bullet for telling those truths, Christie. So, all the other candidates doomed themselves and the party doomed them.
They all stood against a wall while Trump fired a machine gun loaded with shit at them. None, except Christie, thought to step out of the way nor to fire back. No unified voice pointing out the major issues with Trump, all of them pledging loyalty to him, saying they would pardon him, never discussing the seriousness of the charges against him, what that showed about him, how he is a danger to this country...made all of them look as weak as Trump claims they are.
Let's be clear, if you evaluate Trump's campaign, I mean, his actual campaign and how it is run, it is a total joke. The thing is though, he does not need to campaign. He does not have to show up for debates. He gets free media coverage all day every day. Every word he says is broadcast over every channel. He is being handed this nomination, he does not have to work for it. He is just given, at no charge, every advantage, every leg-up, by everybody so that he can put his campaign on cruise and does not have to do anything. He is running his campaign from court houses and that helps him. The media constantly talks about how unbeatable he is, how he is already the Republican nominee...over and over, all day long.
Trump does not have to work for name recognition, does not have to promote what he stands for, does not have prove himself on a stage with his opponents. He sits back, lists his grievances, keeps repeating everybody is out to get him, and puts the donations he gets into paying his legal costs, while he continues to break the law, talk about breaking the law, talk about how no law applies to him, and works to destroy our justice system.
This is now his brand and what his voters want, a criminal that breaks the law and gives the justice system the finger. They want a guy that destroys everything. Among Republican voters, in a primary, he has what it takes to destroy his opponents without lifting a finger. His opponents, outside of Christie, never fought back and that makes Trump look strong to his Republican voters.
The problem is and always has been this for Trump, he's not trying to appeal to anybody outside of his MAGA base and in doing that...he may be the weakest general election candidate we've ever seen.
Nikki Haley polls wonderfully against Biden. Likely cruises to a victory over Biden if she was the Republican candidate, according to the numbers. Trump's best case scenario against Biden is, a third party candidate makes the race a lot closer. If it was/is just Trump vs Biden in the general, I think Biden crushes Trump.
Why?
Because Trump has never and will never do anything to reach out to voters beyond his base. He has done nothing but lose voters, have voters turn their back on him, and has near zero appeal to independents, and zero to crossover Democrats. He had that appeal in 2016, he threw all of that away ever since then and keeps pissing all over those voters.
So, he may be unstoppable in a primary, he looks like a sure thing flop in the general. Which, I think is how Republicans that want to be rid of him want to see him go down. They want to see him lose again in the hopes that his voters pick-up on how big a loser he is for them.
