Ahem...cough..cough, Andrea...WELL there is another way, namely a VAPORIZER (seriously).  Now how the hell would I know...The "substance" of choice, (and most manufacturers of this device only say herbal, medicinal etc..) is placed on a miniheating device that purports to heat the substance to the point of only releasing the vapor which contains the active ingredient, but otherwise does not burn the substance.  There is a covering to the heating element which contains the vapor, and one only inhales the vapor.   This is essentially smoke free, and thereby reduces any carcinogenic, tar laden by products to practically zero.   So for patients with lung problems, or anyone who needs medicinals but is totally turned off by the smoking aspect, this is certainly the device of choice.   If I was ever at liberty to recommend such medication to a patient, say with MS or other chronic condition, this would be the mode I would suggest.
