I'm not ready to embrace a draft, but conscription, absent the many loopholes available during the Vietnam era, would force all of America to decide the worth of this, and future wars. The sons and daughters of America's poor often look to the military as a means to an education. Perhaps if the bleeding was spread among all socioeconomic groups, we wouldn't find ourselves in such a mess. Perhaps the sons of the wealthy and connected, such as my senator, Judd Gregg, wouldn't be allowed a medical deferment due to acne ( this was the case with respect to Vietnam per Al Franken's book).
