By no means am I a Civil Rights expert, but I think that Nixon and the republicans had far less to do with civil rights than democrats. LBJ grabbed it by the horns and with the Congressional democrats pushed it through. Frankly, if anything, the republicans probably saw the writing on the wall. Besides, shortly after LBJ's civil rights push, Barry Goldwater's platform when he ran for president to gut civil rights. Check it out.....Not long ago the Robert Caro, the man writing the three volume biography of LBJ, was on C-SPAN and detailed Johnson's tremendous role in civil rights.
