Gene, this gesture of, I suppose, defiance or lack of remorse was probably nothing more than superficial appearance. Or if not then he's as good as dead already, much like those suicide bombers who have I feel given up hope who act out of utter hopelessness. I have to believe there's always a possibility of redemption, sorry to keep bringing Christianity into this but there are tales of the son who returned who was thought dead. Every time something like this happens it is another nail in the coffin of that religion. Compare it with the story of the Dalai Lama...driven from his country, Tibet raped and turned into a Chinese whorehouse from what I hear. There are plenty of reasons for him to hate the Chinese, but none of them would fit with the Dharma. You have to keep looking deeper for meaning, not just throw up your hands and say oivay! or is it oi vay?
