Hey Krav:

If you're interested in looking into Vonnegut, the first book I'd suggest depends on which Vonnegut you're looking for.

For the funny Vonnegut, I'd say try out BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS.

For the more serious Vonnegut, I'd suggest heading straight to his masterpiece, SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE.

If either of these grabs you, it will suggest a direction to go.

If neither of these grabs you, then I'd submit that Vonnegut will probably not be grabbing you at all. It is okay.

In my opinion, his work has never been filmed well. Don't rely on the movies.

Oh--and if you're interested in what people say/said ABOUT Vonnegut, why not try out THE VONNEGUT STATEMENT by John Somer? You would probably have to use Inter-library Loan for that one.
