Well, I admit to not having any hard numbers at my disposal or even a report to point to that could accurately estimate the ramifications of removing all or most of our illegal workforce but my guess would be at the very least food costs would skyrocket. I can't say one way or another for sure but the estimate stands at about 15 million illegal immigrants in this country right now and obviously doing a study to see how much industry benefits from illegal workers would be tough. After all it's info that companies won't want to divulge. So, I will surrender the economic impact aspect of my argument as open to debate but with the exception that it certainly looks like it would have some impact.

Setting that aside though and I think you'd have to agree on this point...how on earth do we remove 15 million people from our country? Just moving people and assisting them during something like Katrina was a nightmare. Getting our troops out of Iraq is a major undertaking. Getting 15 million people out of our country that are not exactly going to cooperate is not going to be easy and if we determine exactly where it is they are from who pays for getting them back there? What government department or departments would be able to cope with this? What if the countries they came from put up a stink or refuse them? Personally, and maybe it's just me...it seems like it would take us many, many years and huge sums of money to get this done and if we began this process now when as a country we are already way over extended and in the midst of economic chaos...holy cow...how would we do it? Also, I think an attempt to round up 15 million people would lead to some serious civil unrest and likely some serious abuses of civil rights and some sort of mutated Patriot Act nastiness. I mean I think, and maybe people think I'm wrong, it's a logistic nightmare to track, capture, process, transport, jail, and arrange deportation of 15 million people...and having government officials in charge of such a process should get it done...ohhh...around the time our sun is going to run out of gas and go dark on us...

We can't even control our borders now. It seems unlikely we're gonna get 15 million people out of our country and I don't even think most of these politicians want to do it anyway...on both sides. We should focus on border security and better control the flow but getting all these people out...I don't know.

You think it can be done?
