Herring-- Great clarification. I realize my opinion on this is likely to be far in the minority on this board but I appreciate where you're coming from.

As far as the left hand coaxing while the right hand pushes back, I agree with you. These are the sins of our fathers & grandfathers, along with our current generation, that we are left to deal with. My biggest frustration is that I hear a lot of people going on about how complicated it is and how we should have done something 20, 30, 40, even 50 years ago and now the problem is too big to deal with. To me that's a poor excuse for not doing anything now--it's kind of like how some people view the environment--we're already screwed, so what's the point?

I think where we differ on this is that you look at it as a social justice issue, and I see it as purely criminal. As you said, that's a gap we're not likely to close, but I appreciate your candor on this.
