"I guess what detracts from Lucky Old Sun(at least for me) are the spoken word interludes. Brian doesn't sound comfortable with the speaking portion and they come off as pretentious to me.

The songs, however, are fantastic, but (IMO) not on a par with the songs from Smile, although it's granted that the Smile songs were written 40+ years ago. What makes Smile work so well for me is the cohesiveness and the overall vision. A theme is established, expanded on, returned to, and so forth throughout the album. Brian's band is top-notch and I really hope they tour in 09, as I'd love to seem them again--after having seen both the Smile and Pet Sounds tours.

All that said, LOS was still one of my favorite albums from 07, although I've tweaked the playlist to skip the spoken word tracks."

I think I can see what you're saying, although as far as cohesiveness and overall vision, I see LOS as something you might see depicted in a dictionary next to those terms . . . :)

The spoken interludes don't bother me--in fact, they add to my enjoyment of the album. When I listen, I feel like I'm at a program, not just cooped up in my kitchen.

I'll second your hope that the band might tour in 09. It would be my first time seeing them, should I make it to a show. I'm excited by the prospect. Thanks for the conversation.
