Basically, with Rove's invention of George W. Bush as folksy, stupid, everyman and Rove playing around with Palin and the Tea Party, stupidity has been developed as a strategy. It's not a joke.

Quite honestly look what happens when some poor asshole that is running against one of these people has to debate them, they come across looking either dumb (just by association), snobby, looking like a know-it-all, or the ever popular "elitist" jerk.

I mean you can't win running against a moron like O'Donnell...well, you can win the election but having people like Palin or O'Donnell as your opponent pretty much means you will be covered in shit along the way.

Seriously, the idea with this type of candidate is to make sure everything gets dragged down into the muck and it works.
