Icon Trump and My Uncle

One of the greatest mysteries surrounding the almost fanatical devotion to this president is the one related to those Americans who would describe themselves as ultra-staunch supporters of our military. Many years ago, I wrote here of my late uncle, Peter Young, the man for whom I was named, and a member of the Army Air Corps who died in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp in the Philippines. I have several very pro-Trump relatives who regard themselves as deeply patriotic and staunch supporters of our military. I am flabbergasted that they can proudly support a man who cavalierly stated of John McCain that "I like people who weren't captured". Any Democratic candidate who had uttered such a vile comment would have rightly been jettisoned from the race.

Needless to say, I want nothing to do with the aforementioned relatives. I don't know how they reconcile their feelings to our uncle with what Trump said. Beyond shared DNA, our Venn Diagrams have nothing in common.

I appreciate the sentiments in the letter that Reg shared but don't believe they will prompt any sober reflection from any Trump supporters. This is a cult of personality and it's shocking what that fact says about so many of us.
