"To [those] who are here in the room, to those who are watching on television, your government failed you, those entrusted with protecting you failed you, and I failed you. We tried hard, but that doesn't matter because we failed. And for that failure, I would ask - once all the facts are out - for your understanding and for your forgiveness."
- Richard A. Clarke 3/24/04 testimony before the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States.
Condoleeza Rice (who currently heads up the Richard Clarke smear machine) has declined to appear publicly before the commission. Instead Deputy Secratary Of State Richard Armitage was sent to testify in her place. It should be noted Armitage had been sent overseas (to Germany I believe) during the period just prior to 9/11 through the initial meetings that took place at Camp David to discuss what had occured and what action should be taken in the days immeadiately following 9/11. He was therefore unable to answer several questions about what was discussed in those meetings for the simple fact that he was not there.
It should also be noted that Clarke is a Republican and the Bushco smear machine comes down hardest on Republicans who jump ship.
