In my opinion, the William Hung phenomenon is a joke in bad taste that Hung is willingly participating in.  He auditioned for the American Idol series with a truly awful rendition of "She Bangs," and utterly failed to make it past auditions, but his clip was played several times, and people were so amazed by how bad he was that they started requesting it.  A record company paid Hung something like $25,000 to make a record of covers (essentially a novelty record), and they seem to be making money hand over fist.  The guy has made guest appearances on morning TV shows, surrounded by gorgeous backup dancers, and on the surface of things appears to be having a great time, but I can't get over the bad vibe it leaves in my living room when this joke gets paraded across the air.

In my opinion, people with a modicum of taste will tend to stay away from these kinds of shenanigans.  But I don't know your wife.
