An excerpt:

When Houser's car pulled up about 9:30 p.m. Monday, Smolley walked between the car and ATM without saying a word, then pointed the gun at Houser, Lyons said. The video camera on the bank machine captured the moment Smolley's gun was pointed in Houser's face.

At that time, Houser's car jerked forward, slamming the door frame into the gun, which fired. A single bullet passed through Houser's head and then struck Allen in the head, Lyons said.

After the pair were shot, Houser's car drifted across Jefferson and hit the wall of Aamco Transmissions, 512 NE Jefferson Ave., Peoria Police Chief Gary Poynter said.

The $10 that Houser had withdrawn for ice cream was found in the wrecked car.

"It adds to the senselessness of the crime," Lyons said of the money never being stolen.
