In defense of some of the artists, they may get residuals but if they don't own their catalog, they didn't make the licencing decision. Do you recall the whole deal with Michael Jackson buying the Beatles catalog out from under Paul McCartney? Sir Paul wanted to control their tunes so this sort of rubbish would not befall their tunes.

I complain about it aloud so much so that the Mrs insists I have the mute button handy, it bothers me that much(ruin a perfectly memorable song):
