Depends on royalty arrangements. Bands like the Stones probably do get paid. Some get nothing, example Bob Seger's , "Like a Rock", used for the Chevy Ad. The Car company does not have to pay him royalties for some reason, because of how his contract was written at the time he recorded/wrote it. So everytime Bob sees that ad...I'm sure he just winces.
