We lost a beloved dog just a few months ago . . .

Seemed fine during the day . . . I happened to videotape him out on the deck, hanging out with the family.

In the evening, he came downstairs for the usual family time.  He went off to his favored corner--by the door, where he could keep everyone in eyesight and still see outside.

He lay down, and he did not get up again.

Since then I've felt, at least he went while surrounded with his family.  The kids went on playing; the adults talked while muting the commercials . . . and our other dog suddenly became elevated to First Pup.

We miss him greatly.  Now hardly anybody barks at the phone, the doorbell, the garage door, random noises, the toilet, the vacuum, the fridge, the echo of barking...

He was a good dog.  Grief is really okay.
