Were I to bet: we're not only not leaving the near east but we'll be adding more countries to our efforts, so the draft will need be reinstated.

And btw, Rangels rational is idiotic after the 3 1/2 years entrenchment; and how often do Senators sons find their way into harms way.

I agree with you on both accounts, entirely.  Which begs the further question; Is the "draft" the fairest solution to this problem?  I don't think so.  My answer (and I hate to say it) is: Compulsory Military Service for ALL able bodied men and women.  Roughly translated this means at the age of 18, all able bodied (medically/mentally fit) young men and women have an appointment with Uncle Sam.    They would be enrolled in their branch of choice in Armed Forces (no exceptions).  Intial commitment of one year, thereafter eligible for being "called up" for any military service in their area of training and expertise up until the age of 45-50 unless medically unable to do so.  One-Two week "refresher course" each year, or one weekend a month (take your pick).    This makes for a large, active reserve force at ANY time and composed of ALL able bodied citizens which could serve in ongoing conflicts or national emergencies.   Furthermore, the citizen body would be already trained and action ready in case of emergency.   This  situation differs from a "draft" which calls up people only during wartime and trains them only when drafted; and as you point out, certain folks seem to slip by the draft anyways.

The Israelis have this system currently in place.  All able bodied citizens have a military assignment and can be called up (usually with a code word conveyed by telephone or radio transmission) at a moments notice.

And yes, I did serve in the military.  I stood on Guard for Canada, my "home and native land "(voluntarily).  Grenadier Regiment, PFC.  1973-74.  I am convinced the tinnitus in my right ear is from my Belgian FM 101 rifle fired without adequate ear protection.
