See, I guess where I divert from a 'no role for the Federal Government, leave it up to the States to decide everything' approach is the Civil Rights movement and, in fact, the Civil War. That episode in American history was largely around issues of what states could and could not decide for themselves. At the time the burning issue was slavery and every new state that entered the union- 'Bloody Kansas' for example- was contested as a slave or free state.

Just look at the absymal history of Mississippi in the mid-50's and 60's if you think all that potential for misery and corruption went away.

Do you really want to live in a true 'red state/blue state' country where every crackpot locality is free to decide who has rights and who doesn't?

I don't.
