I watched "Bad Faith" last night, a new documentary streaming on Amazon for $2.99 and on Apple+ for 19.99 I think. It is a great history of how the evangelicals became so closely associated with republicans AND how they came to be so concerned about abortion. It also talked about why these "religious, all-about-Jesus" church-going zealots follow trump and want him to be president. And it may be that everyone else knows this and I'm just late to the party...
They fawn over him because they need someone to deconstruct the government as it is and trump is all about destroying everything about our government. After the destruction of the current government system is complete, or as it's being carried out, the Project 2025 lead ultimately by the Council for National Policy can be put in place so our democracy can become a theocracy. Now THAT makes sense to me instead of them following him thinking he's the second coming of Christ.
That means, E, that they won't care that he grabbed women by the p*ssy, or had an affair, or slept with an adult film star, or any other disgusting thing he did. (I wonder though if it came out that those rumors of him raping the 13yr? old girl were actually true if THAT would sway them.) They just need him to destroy democracy.
Another set of observations I made recently is there really are people, that I would not expect, saying "there's no way I'm voting for Biden," which is a Russian talking point btw. "He betrayed us. I'm going to teach the Democrats a lesson and vote for either Cornell West or Jill Stein." I also heard some 20, 30, and early 40 somethings today at a Dems event talk about not being able to campaign for Biden "when we knock doors because there is nothing to sell him with. AND Gaza." Then they said I know: Trump is worse; blah blah blah." So several of us talked about the bills that had passed already and how important SCOTUS was. "Yeah, but it needs to be expanded. He should have expanded it." (Civics. They need to teach Civics again.) Prez can't do that alone and not enough support in Congress BUT if a Supreme dies, Joe would be there with a good choice.
And at that point, I kinda lost my cool and said: you know I am a white woman of privilege and if trump won, what difference would it make to me? I'm not going to be around for many more years (probably 20-30 at most); I won't ever need an abortion, I don't live in Gaza, I'm not worried about having my voting rights taken away (well unless they decide women can't vote), I could just not vote and let you all figure it out. But I can't do that because I care about people of color who aren't privileged and younger people who have more than half a century to make things what they want, and to fix the Voting Right Act and right the wrongs, and expand the Supreme Court and all the things the Progressive Dems among us want. Right now, we just have to get on the bus that will take us closer to where we want to go. Talking like they were makes people not want to vote or to vote for Jill Stein (email lady ring a bell) or a 3rd party, which brings trump. As I have heard David say more than once (more eloquently than I will) When the oxygen masks come down in the plane when it loses pressure, the flight attendants always tell you to put your mask on first and THEN worry about helping others. Right now, we need to put the oxygen mask on our Democracy; our country; and then see to all of the other items we really want to see happen sooner rather than later.
