Peter, I won't deny at all that there does tend to be more violence among folks raised in single-parent families. This is indeed statistically proven (and I won't start a discussion about how statistics can prove almost anything). However, I strongly question the wisdom of including single mothers in the same category as lack of gun control, persistently senseless violence in the media, and severe repression. I think that these other things are some direct causes of our violent culture, while single mothers set up a situation which can often exacerbate these direct causes. But to list single mothers as a cause of violence is, I think, to ignore category distinctions in a very dangerous way.
Also, along the lines of David's wonderful political post, I have an honest question for all you out there. Why on earth are both McCain and son of Bush both calling themselves "Reagan Republicans", and arguing over who fits better into that category? I thought (wishful thinking, I suppose) that Americans were pretty much in agreement on Reagan's incompetency and sinister ways, but here come a couple of candidates who are actively allying themselves with the man. How the hell did that happen?? Anyone have any guesses?
