So here's what's taking up space on my cd player:

Chuck Prophet "No Other Love"- Very cool record with a Baerwaldian type vibe on songs like "I Bow Down And Pray To Every Woman I See" and "What Makes The Monkey Dance". I'd say folks who like David's music will like this.

Joshua Redman "Passage Of Time"- This has been out a while but I just got it a short time ago. I love jazz but sort of avoided Redman because I was under the impression he was overhyped...ahh at least as overhyped as a jazz guy can get...anyway that was bullshit and this record proves it. The ghost of Trane floats through here and there...

Beck "Sea Change"- He seems to be one of the few popular artists who just seems to do whatever the hell he pleases and it seems the record company leaves him to his own devices. Very mellow and sad, haunted by the ghost of Nick Drake this time out. I interviewed Beck back in 2000 but the interview was never used and the bastards actually destroyed the thing. Oh well, we had a great conversation and a long talk about the blues. The record company guy was at least nice enough to send me a photo of me and Beck.  He's worth listening to whenever he puts a record out.

Brad Mehldau "Largo"- I don't think this is his best record but it's the most accessible and if you have not checked out Mr. Mehldau yet this is a good record to start with. Jon Brion produces and adds some interesting touches. I can't thank David Baerwald enough for bringing  this guy to my attention. You do find great music through other peoples recommendations. I'd lay on the sidewalk in rain outside the venue to hear this guy play (stole that from the film 'Round Midnight) but thankfully I won't have to. I have tickets to see him next Saturday night at Jordon Hall in Boston.

Ryan Adams "Demolition"- I like Ryan Adams because he plays rock 'n' roll that's heavily influenced by all that 70's stuff I used to listen to. I'd bet that's why most people like Ryan Adams. Not original but good.

That's all for now.
