Come on....if the shoes were on the other feet, we'd be seeing the same exact type of practice.   And if you believe that is incorrect, just go back and read reports from both the 92 and 96 elections.  Both Bush and Dole used tried to use their military backgrounds against Clinton. 

That's all this is.  Bush claimed he is a "war President", played GI Joe on the aircraft carrier, so Kerry responded the only way he could - he brought up his own background.

So what is hypocritical about these things?
