Interesting. I made a number of trips to Shanghai a few years back and saw a number of churches of several denominations, as well as quite a few functioning Buddhist temples/monastaries. There may have been restrictions that I couldn't see, but I worked with a number of people who openly spoke about attending church and/or bible study.
