Mick, I love you, really, but all is not lost. I had seen that footage and it's sickening, but understand that it's not representative of what goes on in 99% of America. Those damn far right and far left losers need each other to give themselves some kind of warped sense of identity and purpose. Given that iPhones are everywhere, everything is being filmed and the most outrageous, telegenic stuff will get wide distribution and be seen and discussed by everyone, and here's the dangerous part, it provides the illusion that it's the norm, and it's not. But perception is reality for so many of the uninformed masses, hence the fear and outrage that fuel our division. And it's going to happen again, and again, and again. You can set your watch by the cycles of outrage, and counter outrage, and the backlash to the counter outrage, etc. So what do we do about it? We need to educate people in innumerable ways, but given our cocooned information silos, that's a tough job, especially given that there are incentives by some bad political and media actors to keep the outrage going. I'm not as cynical as you are, and yes, perhaps I'm naive, but damn, we owe it to the heroes of the past, and the good and decent folks of the present, and those future citizens who will have to live with the consequences of today. Okay, enough of the rant, gotta prep for those students who'll be coming my way all too soon!
