My Dad used to always tell me that Americans just don't like "mean" Democrats; that it turns them off. In part, I believe a part of that is true, but at the same time, too often Democrats horribly fail at political craftsmanship - they have no artistic inner Lee Atwater in them (now don't get me wrong - I'm not saying become like them, but learn what works from them and use it).
For example, how many times have we seen during highly damaging and viral political episodes some Democrat will throw some sort of lifeline to those in trouble and especially to conservatives? Let them boil in their own self-heated boiling water. Off the top of my head, I can't think of too many examples because they fade so fast it seems, but one I remember is how a while back Diane Feinstein threw a lifeline to Lindsay Graham during a Senate session when he was in some hot water.
It's like they do too little to provoke Trump. For example, imagine if Hillary Clinton "created" a covert Mitt Romney-like hot mic incident where someone asks her if she thinks Trump should testify and she replies, "He doesn't have the balls to." Or Joe Biden remarking in the same way when asked if he fears Trump running again - he could mutter something like, "Hell, no! I already kicked his ass once and would do so again."
Democrats have failed to learn that they are in a winner take all war and to quit fighting them as if they have both legs tied together and an arm behind their backs.
One other lesson from Trump they have failed to learn is that it is possible to create a false narrative that one is their champion when not actually being one - Trump has shown us that it's all about that created belief, even if it is false. I mean, look at all of the times Trump failed to honor things he promised to do and how he is still held up as their David-to-Goliath fighter while Democrats are more often seen as folding on everything.
