Marc,
For every well known, or "famous" musician/writer/composer...you hear, there are countless other excellent, even world class players you will NEVER hear. There are even projects payed for by record labels (even major ones) that won't be released, based upon executive level decisions, of course entirely market driven. That's the rule in this country, anyways. Where what one hears/sees etc..is not as dollar driven, for example in Europe, and to some degree in Canada, the field widens considerably. The "politics" of who/what gets played in the US is even more baffling. Those on the "outs" get shunted to the obscurity lane as soon as possible. Those on the "inside track", you keep hearing over and over, even/especially when you are SICK of their sound (feel free to fill in the names of such artists;your choice here...).
With DB's choice of expression, by example, especially on projects like Triage...you can paint the "political" reaction from the "insiders" fairly easily. This may colour their reaction to future projects?! I dunno, just surmising. Human beings seem to exhibit the same pecking qualities in all fields of endeavor.
