Icon Radiohead...Gene & John

I'll dive in here, as for the melancholy nature of the songs, that's pretty much their ballgame. I'd be surprised to hear Mr. Yorke singing some joyous anthem given the current state of the world. I guess it's mood music and it won't always work for people. My wife hates it, thinks it's all far too depressing. The thing is, at night where I live, when I'm driving in the car there's a highway I travel that has mountains and lots of trees. Down below the highway there are valleys where city lights shimmer in the darkness...and with the music on the stereo it can be so damn beautiful. Sometimes at night I just go driving when I need to repair my state of mind. Even though songs from a band like Radiohead may drip with the paranoia and fear of it's singer...the world can just seem so big and full of hope and I can find some space where I can just be...and sort of come to an understanding of things...of myself and the world. Hell, it works with other music on as well but Radiohead is music that seems to be very introspective and I guess with the singer looking so deep within himself...sometimes to the point of complete wordlessness...or ranting anger...in the right mood...in the right place...it makes you look inward as well...

I've watched them on tv recently, they are showing a free Radiohead concert on satellite tv for the "Hail To The Thief" album and I'll admit that I think it can all be a bit too precious sometimes when they do it live but I'd say the fans like that. Someone gave me a ticket to see them on their tour this summer and I haven't yet decided if I'll go but I would say it's got to be the big rock tour of the year. I'm actually more looking forward to seeing Brad Mehldau in the fall...who did a jaw dropping version of "Everything In It's Right Place" the last time I saw him.

Oh, and to answer your question Gene, I'm not aware of any all acoustic Radiohead album. I think you have to be in the right place at the right time...and maybe given the circumstances the music may hit you...or maybe not. I would say they are definatly not for everyone and they don't try to be. I recently read something where another musician bitched about that fact...that Radiohead can record whatever they want and it sells but when other bands do that it can be career killing. I guess we can see how long it sells for Radiohead. There's nothing I would call a "hit" on "Hail To The Thief" and so we'll see how long they can mantain "mainstream status". I do think "Drunken Punch Up At A Wedding" could be a good radio song though.
