I did get to spend a lot of time with most of the Roth era Van Halen stuff. I don't think I've heard any of the Van Hagar stuff. Growing up in the suburbs they were pretty popular. All my friends loved them and I can't tell you how many times I heard the stuff about Eddie being a "GOD". For me, it was no contest, Led Zeppelin was light years ahead of the Van Halen crew. Hendrix too, I don't know how many times I played "Voodoo Chile". It was funny, my buddies thought I was a "stoner" because I liked Zep and Floyd...music to get stoned to in their estimation. While the Van Halen crew found it best to drink heavily and puke. Ah, to be a teenage boy again. Yup, I agree Roth was there to inject some humor into the proceedings. While, I will say Van Halen never made me want to throw myself under a bus, I did often want to escape it. I just never liked Eddie's style and the joke was only funny once...not again and again and again and again. They bored the hell out of me.
I can understand someone saying the same thing about Radiohead and you're right, they can be depressing. They don't depress me but my wife would much prefer Norah Jones and that's fine.
I don't know, with Van Halen, for me...there just was no there there...you know what I mean...I love Blind Lemon Murphy though, that guy rocked! Too bad about what happened to him.
