I'll throw this one out to everyone. I have a soon-to-be 17 year old cousin who has fallen under the spell of the marines who run the ROTC program at his high school. Anthony lives with his mom and her boyfriend in Florida (I'm in New Hampshire). Anthony is a mature, intelligent, and sensitive kid who has grown up pretty much on his own owing to no father on the scene and a considerably less than mature mother. It's amazing that he is as well adjusted as he is! It's easy to see how the marines at his school have gained his attention and pumped him up for recruitment. Anyway, he's visiting for a few weeks and it's probably the best opportunity I have to try to dissuade this great kid from joining the marines as he intends to do this in a year. I've spoken with him regarding the folly which is Iraq, but to no avail. I'm going to be showing him a recent Frontline episode which details the post traumatic stress disorders seen in returning soldiers/marines, and I'll stress how the marine culture looks upon PTSD as a weakness that should be hidden (and consequently, untreated). I'm wondering if anyone can point me to any other resources that may make an impression. Any opininons would be appreciated.
