Hey Peter-
You're doing a really good job by this kid. It's really hard with someone this age all pumped up on patriotic fever and testosterone; thinking things through is often the last consideration. And no teenager thinks it 's going to be them that gets hit by a bullet or a roadside mine.
As others have suggested, getting in touch with someone who's been there might be the best thing, but I'd recommend Ron Kovic's book "Born on the Fourth of July" or even the Oliver Stone film version of he book (even though it's got that crazy Tom Cruise).
Good luck to you and your cousin. There must be hundreds of families going through a version of the same thing every day.
