Fareed Zakaria has commented extensively on misconceptions about this decade. While perhaps not true of the US, it's actually the case that more people around the world have emerged from "poverty" than before. And a greater percentage live under some from of representative, non-fascist government than before. And many fewer are dying in wars or of disease than in decades past. Global literacy rates are up. And the balance of global trade likely prevented what has been a steep recession from being another Great Depression. Plus, my children were born in the 00's, so I'll never think of it as a horrible time.
