Interesting comments, Ross, on your ex-wife's feelings. My sister-in-law has expressed similar antipathies toward fellow citizens in other parts of Uganda, and don't get her started on those aggressive men in Nigeria! We're so, so far from anything approaching universal brotherhood and sisterhood. Which shouldn't be a surprise as our earliest ancestors, in small groups of 20-50, no doubt harbored suspicions and outright hatreds to those other bands of small groups. Throw in religion, race, nationality, sexual orientation, and a host of other human variables and you have to wonder how humanity got this far! My mom used to think that it would take an alien invasion to get us all working toward the same goal. And if we did turn back those space fiends, it would be back to the ugly old days for us pathetic Earthlings!
A sad commentary, but boy, when we do overcome such relatively inconsequential differences, we can achieve great things!
