Though many like to compare Nixon and Trump when it comes to their corruption, these two are like night and day. Politics has changed so much since 1974 and even since 2000.
Recall, back in 1988 the admission of puffing some of the magic dragon was enough to doom a presidential campaign (and then, just think, though it was still sort of a negative in 1992 when Clinton pulled his BS "didn't inhale," soon after, admitting to a toke wasn't such a bad thing.
And then, we have arrived in this current time and place where nothing is causing Trump to drop out, so I do not believe the politics of '74 is anywhere close to now and that is why Garland should have behaved entirely differently and should be fired.
For example, just think if very early on he had held Barr-like press conferences and demanded Cannon be removed, or, if he had been consistently hammering the US Supreme Ct.
And this is what frustrates me so much about national Democrats - it seems almost every time they end up behind the eight ball and run campaigns based on four years prior.
Democrats, especially those running the show, need to pick up their game and be more willing to brawl brutally instead of fighting with legs tied and both hands tied behind their backs.
For example, their use of the bully pulpit sucks. Use this recent Biden one for an example: the other day Biden spoke out about how Trump needs to "get off it, man" or something like that regarding the turmoil he is causing and that little tiny phrase was the soundbite of the day. Instead, why the fuck aren't these Democrats doing what John Stewart did on CrossFire years ago and taking the media to the woodshed as well. No one seems to remember how much coverage that episode got especially now (and still does), so why didn't Biden demand of the media, why the hell do you keep broadcasting these outlandish lies?
Even Garland could do such a thing, but that dude is apparently afraid of his own shadow when it comes to the major issues (one tidbit someone leaked out is how Garland has been Biden's biggest disappointment in his cabinet - and I believe that).
And Dems need to change because this is what they are facing and have entirely missed about Trump - his Evangelical followers see him as their "Barbarian Protector" and even though that is pure bullshit, this is what the Dems are missing: that they need to have faith in their candidates that their candidate WILL fight like hell for them, and to me, this is one attributed so many Dems fail to convey to their voters - or at least not in the same visceral way as those on the Right.
As my Dad used to say to me, "People don't like mean Democrats," well, sorry, but that day is now over and Democrats, when it comes to MAGA, must be mean and follow what Norville Norquist declares about government: be willing to drag MAGA into a bathtub and drown it.
