The analysis directorate of the CIA was gutted as the political leadership systematically fired or disgraced analysts who refused to lie and exaggerate the Soviet threat. The first big lie was in a paper concocted in Berlin in early 1947 by many people, including the bulk of the people I dedicated "Triage" to. They invented out of whole cloth entire air wings supposedly loaded with ICBMs and flight plans for New York City, all gussied up with fake intel and etc... The purpose of this forgery was to convince Harry Truman to sign off on the National Security Act of 1947, which he did, and which tripled the arms budget, (this is tripled out of WWII levels into a time of peace) and ultimately ended up transforming the United States into a permanent war economy. These were the people that Eisenhower warned us about in his farewell speech, and they are the same types of people who are busy throttling the life out of this poor country of ours.
